For this year's "Person of the Year" - the annual title that Time magazine confers upon individuals who have greatly influenced the news cycle that year - they made a decision to honour a group of individuals instead, called "The Silence Breakers".

"For giving voice to open secrets, for moving whisper networks onto social networks, for pushing us all to stop accepting the unacceptable, The Silence Breakers are the 2017 Person of the Year". The announcement was made on Wednesday morning on the Today Show in the US. Gracing the cover the for annual edition are women including actress Ashley Judd, singer Taylor Swift, and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler. "Today" host Savannah Guthrie acknowledged Wednesday that this year's victor hits "close to home" and mentioned Lauer by name.

Time's parameters of ranking were based on the magazine editors' reckoning of who or what had most influenced the news in the past year, for good or bad. O'Reilly also denies any wrongdoing, but the news company severed its ties with the well-known commentator.

The magazine's shortlist, announced Monday, included 2016 victor President Donald Trump, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, special counsel and former FBI Director Robert Mueller, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the Dreamers and former San Francisco 49ers football player Colin Kaepernick.

The magazine became embroiled in a Twitter row with Mr Trump over this year's award after he claimed he "took a pass" because the publication asked for the opportunity to meet him without confirming he would retain the title. Time called that account false.
