Mariners, Angels acquire int'l slot money

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports is hearing that Shohei Ohtani's decision "could possibly come by early next week". The Twins had $3.2 million in their global pool, but Ohtani narrowed the list of teams he was considering to seven finalists, and the Twins were not on the list.

On Wednesday night, the Seattle Mariners struck on a deal with the Minnesota Twins, sending 2017 fifth-round draft pick David Banuelos to Minnesota for $1 million in worldwide bonus allocations. The Mariners surrendered fifth-round college catcher David Banuelos in return-he was the best catcher in their farm system-and the Angels traded third-round outfielder Jacob Pearson, the fifth-best prospect in their system.

There's no clear frontrunner at this point, with little to no leaks coming out of Ohtani's camp as to where he prefers to play. Given that both teams also have holes at first base and designated hitter, there could be a clear match for Ohtani to both pitch and hit with either of those teams.

Teams interested in signing Ohtani are limited to the amount they have available in their worldwide bonus pools. The Rangers still have the most dollars of the seven finalists at $3.53 million.

The 22-year-old started his first match in 219 days on Tuesday evening, helping the Red Devils to a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow . Tonight the young English left back was handed a place in the starting XI, for the first time since April 30.

The Giants, Dodgers, Padres and Cubs can only offer Ohtani a bonus of $300,000 because they exceeded their bonus pool under the previous collective bargaining agreement. Seattle, Los Angeles and Texas are among seven teams believed to be in the running for Ohtani.

All seven Ohtani finalists have met with the Japanese star and we're probably getting close to a decision. While there is no timetable for a decision, one can expect it to be made around the winter meetings, which begin on December 10.
