China says Indian drone violated its airspace, crashed

China said Thursday an Indian drone "intruded" into its airspace and crashed in the Sikkim sector which includes Dokalam, prompting Beijing to lodge a diplomatic protest with India over the violation of China's territorial sovereignty.

The dispute between the two countries started in June this year, when India said that it is against the attempts of China to lengthen a road on the Doklam/Donglang plateau, at the border of China, India and Bhutan.

India had clarified on Friday that the unmanned aerial vehicle crossed over to the Sino-India border after it lost touch with ground control and crashed. Later, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said it has lodged a protest with India over the issue and warned New Delhi not to use such devices near the border area any more. "At the same time, the foreign ministers of the three countries will also exchange views on worldwide and regional issues of common concern".

Chinese border troops identified the device and were dealing with the matter in a "professional and responsible manner", the official Xinhua News Agency cited the deputy chief of the Chinese military's Western Theater Command, Zhang Shuili, as saying.

In remarks carried widely by state media outlets, Zhang stated that the Chinese border forces had conducted "verifications" with regards to the drone. He was quoted as saying that India had violated "China's territorial sovereignty". "If a Chinese drone flew into Indian territory due to a technical failure, would India accept an explanation that such an incident was a mere accident?"

Despite tensions between the two countries, there is no general ban on Chinese products in India, nor of Indian products in China. "And Chinese side along the border line is Chinese territory", spokesman Geng Shuang said.

SP Manoj Kumar said the accused was being interrogated and that the police were keeping an eye on the law and order situation. The protestors also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should speak on the issue and make his stand clear.

Geng declined to reveal the details of the drone.

"The exact cause of the incident is under investigation".
