Alcohol Damages DNA, Increases Risk of Developing 7 Types of Cancer

Alcohol is carrying you towards cancer by damaging DNA

ALCOHOL can give some people more than simply a hangover, according to new research that shows how it damages DNA in stem cells, thereby increasing the risk of cancer.

They then used chromosome analysis and DNA sequencing to examine the genetic damage caused by acetaldehyde - a harmful chemical produced as the body processes alcohol.

The researchers say their research could explain how alcohol causes DNA damage that leads to cancer in humans. Bits of DNA were deleted, bits were broken and we even saw parts of chromosomes being moved about and rearranged. "While some damage occurs by chance, our findings suggest that drinking alcohol can increase the risk of this damage", according to Ketan Patel, the study's lead author.

As a result, Cancer Research UK urged consumers to reduce their alcohol intake.

Alcohol is known to cause seven types of cancer: mouth, upper throat, laryngeal, oesophageal, breast, liver and bowel. Translating these results to humans means that, for some people, drinking alcohol could be exponentially more unsafe depending on their individual ability to process acetaldehyde.

Andy Carroll scored two important goals during West Ham's last minute win against West Brom on Tuesday night. He has to continue to work and improve.

To see whether DNA in HSCs carried damaged genetic information, the researchers then transplanted damaged HSCs into mice that had their bone marrow destroyed by radiation.

The mice models lacking the critical ALDH enzyme-ALDH2-suffered a fourfold increase in DNA damage in their cells when compared with mice models with fully functioning ALDH2 enzyme. The first level of this protection consists of an enzyme that converts acetaldehyde - a toxic byproduct created in the body when alcohol is metabolised - into a harmless substance.

Disapproving of drinking alcohol in one go, known as "bolting", makes people more inclined to gulp their booze, a study review found.

Links between drinking and cancer are well-documented, however, the science behind this correlation has remained fairly ambiguous until now.

Alongside new insights into the damage that ethanol causes to stem cells, the scientists uncovered new information about the protective mechanisms employed by our bodies in response to alcohol. "What we've shown is that when damage happens as a result of breaking down alcohol, there's a hierarchy when selecting the best way to carry out repairs".

ASN: 2017, safest year ever for aviation
Passengers shouldn't be too concerned even if their next flight isn't in the top 20 safest airlines though. AirlineRatings.com praised Qantas for its "extraordinary record of firsts in safety and operations".

"It's important to remember that alcohol clearance and DNA fix systems are not flawless, and alcohol can still cause cancer in different ways - even in people whose defense mechanisms are intact", said professor Ketan Patel, lead author of the study.

But worldwide millions of people (particularly those from South East Asia) lack, or have faulty versions of, these enzymes meaning when they drink acetaldehyde builds up.

Previous research looking at the precise ways in which alcohol causes cancer has been done in cell cultures.

Since alcohol contributes to an estimated 12,000 annual cancer cases in the country, they contend, the study is further proof that most should cut back on how much they indulge.
