Four powerlifting players were killed and two others injured seriously Sunday after a vehicle they were travelling in hit road divider and crashed into a roadside pole, police said.

The accident took place near the Singhu border in Alipur Police Station area in northwest Delhi.

Saksham Yadav, 28, who won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship for India, was seriously injured along with another weightlifter, Rohit, 19, a police official said. While another person identified as Rohit (23) suffered minor injuries and is still recuperating at the hospital.

The victims were travelling on the Delhi-Panipat National Highway-1 in a Swift Dezire vehicle.

The other occupants of the automobile - Saksham and Rohit - were subsequently referred to Max Hospital's Shalimar Bagh branch in Delhi from where they were further sent to AIIMS as they continue to receive treatment. The auto was moving at a high speed and the accident took place after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said the deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Saurabh (18), Yogesh (24) and Harish Roy (20). Yadav was later shifted to the trauma centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where his condition was said to be "extremely critical". Some liquor bottles were found in the vehicle.
