Meryl Streep, Debra Messing, Michelle Williams and other actresses arriving on the red carpet explained that the awards-show "blackout" is created to show solidarity around the new Time's Up initiative, which in turn aims to call for legislative and other solutions to end widespread sexual misconduct and inequality in Hollywood and in other American workplaces.

Streep attended with Ai-jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; Williams with Tarana Burke, the founder of the "me too" movement; and Watson with Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan, a black-feminist organization.
