It'll be released in selected markets around the world (where hydrogen refuelling stations are already available, obviously, which pretty well rules out South Africa, with exactly one for the whole country) as the technological flagship of the company's eco-friendly range (Hyundai has promised 18 low-emission models by 2025) and features a raft of new and upgraded driver aids. According to electric vehicle charging point finder Zap-Map, there are just 12 hydrogen fuelling stations in the UK. It keeps some Hyundai cues, such as the same ultra-slim daytime running lights as the recently launched Kona baby SUV, but features a more complex front grille that's created to reflect the fact that there's not a combustion engine under the bonnet.

Along with its hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, which converts hydrogen gas to electricity creating water vapour as its only "tailpipe" emission, the vehicle also comes with a range of advanced autonomous driving functions that are likely to filter into Hyundai's mainstream models over the next few years.

Nexo FCV will go on sale in select markets later this year.

The Nexo has an estimated driving range of 370 miles (595 km), 105 miles (169 km) more than its predecessor.

Hyundai has revealed that its new hydrogen-powered SUV will be called Nexo and pack semi-autonomous driving systems. At the core of Nexo's technology is an electric motor that generates 160 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. While that 0-60 time is down to 9.5 seconds and well off that of the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell's, it's at least in the ballpark of something like a Toyota Prius.

Hyundai has been part of the handful of automakers pushing fuel cell electric vehicles for years now.

With 95kW from the fuel cell itself and 40kW from the battery, the NEXO has a system output of 135kW. Speaking of space, the Nexo is 183.9-in (4,671-mm) long, 73.2-in (1,859-mm) wide, and 64.2-in (1,630-mm) high, with a wheelbase of 109.8 inches (2,789 mm).
