Turkey seeks ‘lasting peace’ in Syria in 2018

On Monday, Russia said pilotless drones carrying explosives attacked Russian bases in Syria last weekend without causing any casualties or damage.

Combat UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) attacking Russian military facilities in Syrian Hmeymim and Tartus overnight into January 6 were launched from the de-escalation zone in Idlib, according to Russia's Defense Ministry.

Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Russian Federation and Iran must fulfill their duties under a joint accord reached with Turkey past year in which the three countries announced a "de-escalation zone" in Idlib.

NC loses Toyota-Mazda auto plant to Alabama
US new vehicle sales fell 2 percent in 2017, after hitting a record high in 2016, and are expected to fall further in 2018. The plan for the Alabama plant appears to reflect Trump's calls for more investment and jobs in the United States.

"Moscow and Tehran have influence on the Syrian regime", Cavusoglu added.

Assad and his allies command the single largest chunk of Syria, followed by US-backed Kurdish militias who control much of the north and east Syria and are more concerned with shoring up their regional autonomy than fighting Damascus. "The documents stress that it is necessary for Ankara to meet assumed obligations to ensure ceasefire by controlled armed forces and intensify efforts to put observation points in the de-escalation zone in Idlib for preventing such UAV attacks on any targets", the commentary said.

Russian Federation is hoping to hold a Syria peace congress in its Black Sea resort of Sochi on January 29-30.

The fighting and airstrikes have forced more than 60,000 people to leave their homes since November 1, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

"Earlier, Iran, Turkey and Russian Federation acted as guarantors of the ceasefire in Idlib".
