Red Cross Puts Call Out For Blood Donations

These number can only get decreased when people will come forward to give their support for blood donation.

Upcoming community blood drives are scheduled for Bonavista (Jan. 17), Clarenville (Jan. 18), Carbonear (Jan. 23) and Placentia (Jan. 25).

The Red Cross says because of the cancellations, 5,500 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected.

This January, National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types.

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year.

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Kelly Isenor, a communications manager of the Connecticut Blood Services Region in Farmington.

Along with winter weather, flu season and the holidays contributed to a shortage of 28,000 blood donations in November and December, according to the organization. Eligible donors can schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, by visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

A single blood donation can help up to three patients. Through the Make a Difference campaign, all those who come to give blood or platelets this month at Red Cross blood drives in CT (and in other New England states and parts of New York) will receive a $5 DD Card.

NC loses Toyota-Mazda auto plant to Alabama
US new vehicle sales fell 2 percent in 2017, after hitting a record high in 2016, and are expected to fall further in 2018. The plan for the Alabama plant appears to reflect Trump's calls for more investment and jobs in the United States.

In 2016, there were 67,692 Bonfils blood donors, which added up to 142,214 blood donations made in Colorado that year.

All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available for patients - especially platelet and type O negative and B negative donors.

The Red Cross encourages individuals to make a donation appointment and to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire to help speed up the donation process.

Platelets, a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, must be transfused within five days of donation and, therefore, are always in high demand.
