Court documents state that Ullah carried a 9-volt battery inside his trousers pocket with wires connected to a metal pipe.

Defense lawyer Amy Gallicchio said Ullah, who is now held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center federal jail in Manhattan, needed medical attention for painful stitches that were "embedded" in his skin and for a medical dressing that hadn't been changed recently. The man accused of detonating a homemade explosive device at a busy transit hub in New York City last month, injuring five people, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges from a six-count indictment.

The federal grand jury indicted Ullah yesterday with one count of providing and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and one count of using and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Akayed Ullah, 27, would face life in prison if convicted of the attack in a passageway near the Port Authority bus terminal on December 11 that left three persons injured.

When asked by a judge if he had a plea, he responded saying not guilty. He seemed to walk gingerly to his seat before the hearing began.

Prosecutor George Turner said prosecutors had gathered materials for the case including surveillance videos, photos from the crime scene, DNA evidence, statements that Ullah made to officials after his arrest, postings from his social-media accounts, e-mails, MetroCard data, and phone records.

The judge said he may set a trial date at the next hearing, which was set for April 13.
