Ten Rohingya Muslims whom the Myanmar military had admitted to killing in Rakhine state on September 2 previous year were "innocent civilians" and not militants as the Myanmar government claimed, the rebel group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) said on Saturday.

The Rohingyas found in the mass grave had threatened Buddhist villagers and were killed in retaliation, the Independent reported, citing a statement on the military commander-in-chief's Facebook page, as saying.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono visited Myanmar's Rakhine state on Saturday after meeting with the country's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, in the capital of Naypyitaw a day earlier.

Myanmar's military admitted this week that soldiers and villagers were responsible for the deaths of 10 Rohingya Muslims found in a grave last month in Inn Dinn village of Maungdaw Township. It says they're immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which has been collecting information on Rohingya refugees' views on return, in its weekly operational update from December 27, 2017 to January 7, 2017, on the refugee crisis said that "some refugees have also asked for reassurances about UNHCR's involvement in the process".

In response to Myanmar's military's admission of killing Rohingyas, Amnesty International said on Thursday that the confession is just the "tip of the iceberg".

"This grisly admission is a sharp departure from the army's policy of blanket denial of any wrongdoing", said James Gomez, Amnesty International's regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Since August, military operations have driven more than 650,000 Rohingya into refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh.

The Japanese foreign minister said Tokyo, one of Myanmar's biggest foreign aid donors, planned to give about $20 million for humanitarian support to Rohingya refugees, subject to parliamentary approval, Kyodo said.
