Amazon has unveiled its view of the future of retail with the official opening of the company's next-generation store.

One retail expert has predicted it will trigger a race between Coles and Woolworths to be the first Australian adopter of checkout-free technology. The technology was packed into a variety of smart home products, ranging from speakers and radios through to lamps and vacuum ... You will get a receipt in your app about five minutes later. You can also scan the code to bring other family members (young children, for example) or friends in with you. From there, machines take over, watching the items plucked from shelves and adding them to a shopping cart.

If they change their mind, the items are deduced from the grocery bill. Once the app is open and the shopper is scanned, the phone can be put away.
