Asian Shares Tumble After Wall Street Suffers Its Biggest Decline Since 2011

Fed fund futures are now pricing in only two rate hikes this year, a sea change from only a few days ago when they priced in about 80 per cent chance of three hikes with the market even rife with talk of four hikes.

The dollar was trading at 109.10 yen against 109.13 yen in NY, sharply lower than rates around 110 yen seen a day earlier.

The hard tumble began Tuesday in Asia.

Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Tuesday with the benchmark Nikkei stock index plunging 4.73 percent in rampant selling after the Dow Jones Industrial Average logged its biggest-ever daily point loss and US 10-year Treasury yields spiked overnight.

Japan's Nikkei tumbled as much as 5.6 percent while Taiwan shares lost 5.3 percent at one point.

USA stocks swooned Friday and Monday as investors anxious that accelerating inflation and higher interest rates could derail the market's record-setting rally.

Tokyo stocks fell nearly across the board after the Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 1,175.21 points, or 4.60 percent, in NY on Monday, incurring the worst one-day point loss ever.

Export-oriented names, including automakers Toyota, Nissan and Honda, as well as technology firms Hitachi and Canon, were downbeat, dragged down by the yen's appreciation.

The Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 1,100 points Monday as stocks took their worst loss in six and a half years.

The Dow's point loss would be its biggest of all time, though in percentage terms, its 5.6 percent decline wasn't as big as its worst drop during the financial crisis.

Bitcoin also tumbled, hitting a 12-week low of $6,600.

"Selling accelerated as Dow futures extended declines during Tokyo trading hours and concerns grew that USA equities will continue to fall tonight", Makoto Sengoku, a market analyst at the Tokai Tokyo Research Institute, was quoted as saying.

A payroll increase led to fear of a rate hike and Monday's market "adjustment", he said, "but there's no significant concerns about the fundamentals of the US economy".

Other banks also fell.

The declines were led by Japan's Nikkei which took one of its steepest dives since the 1990s before recovering to close down 4.7 precent.

Dublin's ISEQ index had also opened sharply lower, falling by 3.3%.

In China, the Shanghai and Shenzhen benchmarks closed down 3.3 and 4.2 precent, respectively, and the NASDAQ-style ChiNext index down 5.3 percent. On Monday, the key market gauge lost 592.45 points. "Until the USA stabilizes", he said.
