Maldives President gives reasons for emergency alleges coup attempt by top judiciary

"Soon after the declaration, security forces stormed into the Supreme Court building, where Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and judge Ali Hamid were arrested".

A statement from the court was issued late Tuesday after President Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared a state of emergency and security forces raided the court building and arrested the two justices.

As part of the crackdown, police also detained Mr Yameen's half-brother, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had ruled the Maldives for 30 years until 2008 and now stands with the opposition.

In its ruling last Thursday, the Supreme Court said it found that prosecutors and judges had been influenced "to conduct politically motivated investigations" into the allegations leveled against Nasheed, former vice president Ahmed Adeeb, and the other opposition figures.

In a video message shortly before his arrest, Gayoom said: "I have not done anything to be arrested".

On the Sunday morning talk shows, Democrats ripped the memo pressed by Republicans, saying it was a purely political effort. A campaign is building among Trump allies to have the US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein sacked.

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who's now in exile, has called on nearby India and the U.S.to intervene in the crisis.

Yameen has been president of the Maldives since 2013, and has been reportedly accused of corruption and violations against freedom of speech. "President Yameen should resign immediately".

Exiled former Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed on Tuesday asked India to send an envoy backed by military to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

The emergency declaration came after standoff between President and Supreme court where the former refused to comply by the court order to release opposition leaders.

It said the judges, upon considering concerns raised by the president, had chose to "annul" a section ordering the release and re-trial of the nine people, seven of whom are imprisoned in the Maldives.

South Africa have been dealt another blow after wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock was ruled out with a wrist injury. Not just Chahal, South Africa were undone by another wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav who scalped three wickets.

Yameen defied the ruling and ignored calls from the United Nations, European Union, and foreign governments, including India and the U.S., to comply with it. He asked the U.S. to ensure that all American financial institutions stop all transactions of the Yameen regime's leaders.

"During this time, though certain rights will be restricted, general movements, services and businesses will not be affected", the presidential office said in a statement announcing the state of emergency, which will be in effect for 15 days.

Both countries made the decision after Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency.
