New Jersey Joins Multi-State Suit Over Net Neutrality Repeal

Support was growing in the U.S. Senate for a measure that would undo the Federal Communications Commission's repeal of net neutrality rules, but votes were still lacking in the House, according to a leading congressional critic of the new federal policy.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo of NY and Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana also have signed executive orders barring their states from entering contracts with internet service providers who refuse to follow net neutrality principles.

"These actions put New Jersey at the forefront of countering the FCC's disastrous decision to roll back net neutrality".

Gov. Phil Murphy has signed an executive order that prohibits the state from doing business with internet service providers that do not honor now-defunct net neutrality requirements. "New Jerseyans deserve free, open, and equal access to the Internet".

Net neutrality is the principle that all internet service providers are obligated to treat all internet traffic as the same.

Net neutrality is critical to the state's technology-driven and knowledge-based economy, she said.

On Monday, New Jersey joined over 20 other US states in a lawsuit filed against the FCC related to the repeal of the regulations governing net neutrality.

"This isn't just about how much you will pay for Netflix or Amazon Prime or access to the hottest movies and new entertainment programming", she said.

The size of the state government means that ISPs that fail to follow net neutrality regulations could stand to take a big financial hit if New Jersey refused to do business with them.

Grewal's statement continued by saying the state's position is that the FCC acted against evidence it was present and arbitrarily when repealing the net neutrality provisions. FCC chairman Ajit Pai maintained that consumers would see little change in their internet experience and that the move was merely correcting federal regulatory overreach.

Also on Monday, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the state would join 21 others in a lawsuit against the FCC.
