A Southwest Airlines plane slid sideways while preparing for takeoff from Baltimore-Washington International Airport on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The 143 passengers and six crew members aboard Flight 906 out of BWI on Wednesday morning safely climbed down stairs and were bussed to the airport terminal following the incident, Southwest officials said. In 2016, runway and taxiway excursions accounted for about a fifth of total accidents involving commercial aircraft.

Southwest said the plane "traveled to the edge but did not exit" the taxiway. The FAA will investigate the incident. Passengers were evacuated and transported back to the terminal. "The Customers onboard the flight will be accommodated on a different aircraft and are scheduled to arrive in Montego Bay approximately three hours behind schedule".

According to the airport tracker website flightview a flight to Atlanta, Georgia has been delayed until 3.02pm local time - but it is unclear if it is because of the Southwest airline incident.
