Can Suppressing a Common Amino Acid Stop Cancer?

Discovery in understanding the spread of breast cancer could lead to new treatments to slow metastasis

Discovery in understanding the spread of breast cancer could lead to new treatments to slow metastasis

Asparagine, an amino acid also found in dairy and poultry, somehow helps cancerous cells to move from the breast into the bloodstream and colonise other areas of the body, Cambridge researchers found.

However, as the research is still in the very early stages scientists must now replicate the findings in human trials, and also investigate which patients are most likely to benefit from any potential treatment, it was noted.

Researchers have laid out a two-pronged approach moving forward: Discover if a low-asparagine diet reduces asparagine levels in healthy patients, then test the method in cancer patients.

Actor John Mahoney, Dad On 'Frasier,' Dies At 77
I just want to be back home . "Though he will be missed, his work and impact will endure for generations to come". Mahoney, then 37, signed up for an eight-week acting class in IL , which happened to be taught by David Mamet .

Prof Hannon told the BBC: "We're seeing increasing evidence that specific cancers are addicted to specific components of our diet". The team injected the mice suffering from breast cancer with the enzyme L-asparaginase to prevent the production of the amino acid asparagine. The study has been performed on mice diagnosed with a severe breast cancer.

In several other cancer types, increased ability of tumour cells to make asparagine was found to be associated with reduced survival.

Most breast cancer patients do not die from their initial tumour, but from secondary malignant growths (metastases), where cancer cells are able to enter the blood and survive to invade new sites.

US Banks stop the use of Credit Cards in Bitcoin Purchasing
On Monday, bitcoin pulled back in early trading in London to below $8,000 or approximately 2.5% lower than Friday's close. Nelms, you alright there, mate? Late in January, Capital One also barred cryptocurrency purchases with its credit cards.

From there, legions made the assumption that you should cut asparagus, as well as potatoes and seafood (which are also high in asparagine) out of your diet to stave off cancer. Foods low in asparagine include most fruits and vegetables. Now their tumors were seen to have a significantly slower rate of spread across the body and this, in turn, prolonged lives of the mice.

"Our work has pinpointed one of the key mechanisms that promotes the ability of breast cancer cells to spread", said Professor Greg Hannon, lead author of the study based at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. But since asparagine may be synthesized in the body, dietary restrictions may need to be accompanied by drugs that interfere with the metabolic pathways that give rise to the amino acid.

And perhaps for people with this type of resistant breast cancer, changing their diet could make a difference.

Budros Ruhlin & Roe Inc. Sells 1677 Shares of The Coca-Cola Co (KO)
However, at one point, in the middle of the day, the price touched a high of $2.23 before it finally returned some of the gains. Hudock Capital Group Ltd Liability Company holds 0.73% of its portfolio in The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) for 34,766 shares.

If further research replicates this finding in humans, reducing cancer patients' consumption of asparagine could enhance existing therapies, Knott added.
