The CDC said this year's flu season is the worst the nation has seen since the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention released the new data on Wednesday, bringing the total for this season - which began last October and runs through May but is nearing its peak - to nearly 3,300 cases, as well as 667 hospitalizations and 34 deaths. Of those deaths, 100 have been recorded since December 31. The department said 78 percent of those cases involved residents who did not get flu shots this season.

More than three quarters of the positive influenza specimens confirmed by MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories this flu season have been an H3N2 virus.

- Thirty-four people died from the flu between January 28 and February 3, bringing the total number of flu deaths in the state to 140, according to data released by health officials on Thursday.

The H2N3 is the influenza strain that caused the most of the problems this season.

During the 2016-2017 flu season, 44.2 percent of MI residents were vaccinated against flu.

Even though this season's vaccine is proving to be less effective than officials expected, the CDC is still recommending vaccination.
