Small asteroid will pass very close to Earth on Friday

2018 CB is due to fly past the earth at 10.30pm this evening, and will travel past just 39,000 miles away, or about one fifth of the distance to the moon.

Asteroid 2002 AJ129 came by the planet at a distance of only 2.6 million miles (4.2 million km) - 10 times the distance of the moon - a far greater distance than the asteroid skimming past earth tonight.

Despite its size and the close proximity, NASA says the space rock will pass by safely at around 5.30pm EST Friday.

Another asteroid is headed our way - the second this week - but there's no need to worry.

The asteroid is estimated at about 50 feet to 130 feet in size, possibly a little larger than the asteroid that exploded over Russian Federation five years ago this month. Friday's asteroid was not expected to enter Earth's atmosphere.

The rock was spotted Sunday from an observatory in Tucson, Arizona.

Surprisingly, it is not the first asteroid to pass by this week. That's still well within one lunar distance, but safe enough that it never posed a serious threat.

Asteroids this size don't often come this close to Earth but it is not unheard of.

According to the astronomers, our planet will have a close encounter with an asteroid which is between 50 and 130 feet wide.

"Although 2018 CB is quite small, it might well be larger than the asteroid that entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, nearly exactly five years ago, in 2013".

On Tuesday, another asteroid, estimated at between 50 and 100 feet (15 and 30 metres) in size, passed within 114,000 miles (184,000 km) of the planet.

According to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies 13 other close approaches are set to take place this month, followed by five in March.
