The Big Winner in the Waymo-Uber Trial

Uber investor: Management told board Otto due diligence

Uber investor: Management told board Otto due diligence "turned up nothing"

Waymo filed its lawsuit against Uber a year ago, claiming the company used stolen self-driving auto trade secrets.

As part of the deal, company officials said, Uber has agreed to pay 0.34 percent of the company's equity at a $72 billion valuation - a sum that that exceeds $244 million.

Uber and Waymo announced Friday that they had settled their court battle over the alleged theft of self-driving vehicle trade secrets.

Uber also agreed not to use any of Waymo's technology for autonomous driving as part of the settlement, which was approved by Judge William Alsup as he dismissed the case.

"As Uber's statement indicates, no trade secrets ever came to Uber", Kalanick said.

"We have reached an agreement with Uber that we believe will protect Waymo's intellectual property now and into the future", the statement reads.

In settlement talks previous year, Waymo had sought at least $1 billion from Uber, and wanted an independent monitor to ensure Uber does not use Waymo technology in the future, Reuters reported. Of course, we are also competitors.

"While we cannot erase the past, I can commit, on behalf of every Uber employee, that we will learn from it..."

The case hinged on Waymo's ability to show not only that Levandowski had taken Google's private source code, but that Uber had used it improperly to catch up with rivals.

Moreover, Levandowski was expected to be called to the witness stand as Waymo's final witness on Friday, but he was unlikely to say anything of substance, as he had previously invoked his Fifth Amendment privilege.

The attorney representing Waymo, the self-driving auto company spun out of Google, settled its court case with ride-hailing giant Uber on Friday.

Khosrowshahi said in his statement he regretted the handling of the Levandowski matter, which occurred before he took over as CEO previous year. For that I am sorry.

A range of automotive manufacters have begun teaming up with tech startups over the past year, including Ford with Argo.ai, General Motors with Cruise and VW Group and Hyundai with Aurora, a new self-driving company started by former Google vehicle tech lead Chris Urmson.

"There is no question that self-driving technology is crucial to the future of transportation - a future in which Uber intends to play an important role", he writes. That's interesting, especially since the trade secrets at the heart of the case were all related to hardware.

The closely watched trial, which started earlier this week, had already seen testimony from Travis Kalanick, the Uber CEO who was ousted previous year. While Uber's former CEO Travis Kalanick probably likely would have continued fighting, no matter the cost, Khosrowshahi saw the value in putting the case behind him. Because yesterday Kalanick wrapped up his second and last day on the stand in federal court in San Francisco by repeating his claim that he didn't hire a top Google engineer for the goal of stealing technology secrets for self-driving cars. In November 2017, Khosrowshahi disclosed that Uber had paid out hackers who spirited away data on 57 million customers and drivers in 2016, and the company fired two top security executives.

Asteroid to closely pass by earth on Friday
Despite its size and the close proximity, NASA says the space rock will pass by safely at around 5.30pm EST Friday. That's still well within one lunar distance, but safe enough that it never posed a serious threat.
