Chicago Public Schools and hundreds of other schools in the region all closed Friday because of the storm, and Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport announced that cancelation of hundreds of flights, per the Tribune.

Kieran Sheridan, chief operating officer for the Chicago Department of Aviation, said in a Friday press conference that the city's airports were "well-prepared".

Thursday evening running through Friday night, a Winter Storm Watch has been scheduled to go into effect for most of the metro area issued by the National Weather Service.

The storms could leave more than a foot of snow in some parts of Chicago area by Sunday, according to the report.

"We will be doing everything we can to prepare for and combat this major winter storm", said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski in the statement.

Winter weather this week killed several people in accidents in the Midwest, including six in Iowa, two in Missouri and one in Montana, local media in those states reported.

Right now there are seven flights cancelled to and from Traverse City's Cherry Capital Airport.

The expectation of up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) around Chicago prompted officials to close the city's public schools to about 390,000 students Friday.
