He added that while the priority is still to fight the remains of ISIS and jihadist terrorism in Syria, the Assad regime will not escape justice.

But Macron said that the evidence so far is not conclusive on WMD use by Damascus and he said that proof of chemical weapons use is "no established" as yet by French intelligence and military agencies.

In a telephone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last Friday, Macron expressed his concern at signs that chlorine bombs had been used against civilians recently.
