Amazon is reportedly cutting hundreds of corporate jobs

Amazon laying off corporate employees in rare cutback

Amazon said previous year that it planned to create 100,000 jobs in the U.S.as it bulks up fulfillment centers and adds more customer service representatives.

The Times went on to report that the layoffs line up with cuts in Amazon divisions outside Seattle, including self-publishing arm Createspace, which is conducting its second round of layoffs in two years, and Zappos, which laid off roughly 30 people. Many, though, will interpret the prospective layoffs as a huge slight to workers, since there's a newfound hatred for US -based tech companies like Amazon. Amazon announced recently they are creating an AI chip to process Alexa commands on-device.

Amazon spokesperson Teal Pennebaker said in an emailed statement that the company constantly evaluates hiring needs to dedicate resources efficiently and effectively, adding that fluctuations in headcount are common as the company grows across the business at different rates.

Amazon is still furiously hiring on other fronts.

Samsung executive connected to Samsung Pay, Knox and Bixby leaves for Google
This is not to say the mobile is not making money, more that Apple has done an excellent job in monopolizing smartphone profits. He left Samsung in December a year ago for personal reasons despite generous offers.

The layoff suggests Amazon is trying to control spending and the cut is not unusual for such a big company. It has around 4,000 open positions in Seattle and approximately 12,000 positions globally.

The job cuts will primarily impact its consumer retail team.

Cuts are likely to affect hundreds of jobs in the Seattle head office as well as hundreds more elsewhere.

"For affected employees, we work to find roles in the areas where we are hiring", the online retailer assured.

Geekwire, which reports on Seattle tech firms, cited Amazon's frugality leadership principle that states in part, "Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency and invention", but it also noted that cutbacks were unusual for Amazon.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is well known for its rapid workforce expansion rate, but that doesn't mean the e-commerce giant doesn't need to slash jobs every once in a while as well. It was also a quarter in which Alexa outperformed Jeff Bezos' infamously high expectations, leading him to say, "expect us to double down" on the voice assistant. Last year, Amazon introduced a career coaching program, called Pivot, described as a tool to help lower performers make it through such programs.

Layoffs at the company are rare.
