Trial begins for Palestinian accused of assaulting Israeli soldiers

Ahed Tamimi was detained in a night raid in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh nearly two months ago, after video circulated showing her and a cousin slapping and shoving two heavily armed Israeli soldiers following an incident in which a soldier had shot in the head and seriously injured their 15-year-old cousin Muhammad Tamimi.

Lasky, the defense lawyer, objected, saying the family wants the proceedings to be public.

Ms Tamimi is from the West Bank town of Nabi Saleh, where more than 600 members of her extended family live.

Only family members were allowed to remain in the courtroom at Ofer military base, and diplomats were also asked to leave. Aside from the charge of assaulting an IDF soldier, Tamimi is charged with five other offenses including stone-throwing, incitement and making threats against IDF soldiers.

In 2012, Istanbul's Basaksehir Municipality granted al-Tamimi the prestigious Hanzala Courage Award for defying Israeli soldiers who had just arrested her brother.

On Tuesday, Ahed was brought before the Ofer military court in the occupied West Bank.

NGO Monitor responded, "Ahed Tamimi is a prime example of how children are exploited and weaponized in the Arab-Israeli conflict".

Jabareen said he would appeal to the High Court of Justice.

Her mother has also been charged with incitement on social media and assault, and her cousin, Nour, who participated in the incident, has been charged with assault.

The video caused a great debate in both Israeli and Palestinian societies.

"The court decided what is best for the court, and not what is good for Ahed", Lasky later told reporters, accusing the judge of trying to keep the world from watching.

"Too many of our children quickly learn that they may be imprisoned or killed simply for who they are", read the petition that was published and shared with media Monday.

In this January 4, 2018 file photo, demonstrators hold posters reading, "Release Ahed" during a protest demanding Israel to release Ahed Tamimi. Palestinians say her actions embody their David vs. Goliath struggle against a brutal military occupation, while Israel portrays them as a staged provocation meant to embarrass its military. "Dream Defenders stands with them and all Palestinians in their righteous struggle", the petition contiuned adding that a delegation from the group had gone to Palestine late a year ago and met with different communities including the Tamimi family.

On Tuesday Lieutenant Colonel Menachem Lieberman ordered the trial take place as a closed hearing, ejecting journalists, human rights researchers and observing western diplomats.

Ahed's case was adjourned until March and is expected to continue for months, during which may be forced to stay in custody. "What I think is that the court doesn't think it's good for the court to have all of you inside of it so you can not carry on watching her trial", she told reporters.

She said she is still waiting to receive case material from the prosecutor, and that her client did not enter a plea.

Worldwide human rights groups have criticized the aggressive prosecution, and diplomats from the European Union and several European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, attended Tuesday's hearing as observers before they were kicked out along with journalists.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have pointed out that under the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which Israel is a state party, the "arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time".
